Hands On Learning

Weaving:  
After reading A Goat in the Rug, a narrative non-fiction story about a Navajo weaver, the students tried their hands at weaving. They soon became experts with the under over pattern.




Six-digit Numbers
The students took turns rolling the dice and filling in the blank spaces until they had a six-digit number. Then they each read the number and compared the value of the numbers they wrote.

Plane Shapes

After making models of plane shapes using toothpicks and marshmallows, the students described their shapes by telling the number of sides, vertices, and angles.




Japan

The Second Graders have begun studying Japan and are learning about the country's geography and culture. They have learned that in the Japanese culture, the carp symbolizes courage and strength because of its ability to swim up a waterfall. The students made carp windsocks which decorate the landscape of Japan from April to early May to celebrate Children's Day on May 5th.


Eli brought a special treat of Mochi Ice Cream!  For those of you unfamiliar with mochi ice cream, (as I was), mochi is a Japanese rice cake made with glutinous rice flour and has a chewy texture. Mochi Ice Cream is a thin layer of mochi wrapped around an ice cream filling. It’s creamy, sweet, with a little chewy outer shell, and just a very delightful treat. We all enjoyed this special treat and highly recommend that you try it.






Choir Trip to Harrisburg

Second Grade choir members thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Harrisburg where they performed at the Capitol and then visited Hershey World.




 Capstone Project: 8th Grade

The topic for this year's Eighth Grade Capstone Project was climate change. The students worked in small groups to present information on the effects of climate change on oceans, the arctic, and extreme weather. Their presentations also spoke of the consequences of climate change for us. The students were extremely knowledgeable and very well spoken.

Science: Simple Machines In science class the students have been learning about the six types of simple machines: screw, lever, inclined plane, wedge, wheel and axle, and pulley. After learning about inclined planes, the students were given the challenge to create an inclined plane so that a car at the top of a box could travel down the ramp and continue rolling.                               First the students discussed what classroom materials to use to create the inclined plane. Healthy Living: Touching Safety Rules The Second Graders were all ears as Ms. Jester taught about the touching safety rules. The boys chanted, 'Say no, get away! Tell someone, tell someone!" Students named people in their families, school, and community who are trusted adults and could lend a helping hand. CommunityTime This week the Second Graders showed their creativity when decorating snack bags. The Early Childhood students will fill the bags, and they will be distributed to the needy. Continental Math League Round 2 on the CML was completed this week. Students did their best to solve six very challenging word problems. The photos show their intense concentration. Sacrament of Reconciliation Prayer Service Celebrating God's Forgiveness and Mercy On Tuesday, February 26th. Fr. Richard Jasper celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The students began the evening with a prayer service, which was followed by individual confessions. Click on the video below to hear their song, Mercy on Me .
