Owen and Angel work together to come up with an idea for making a tool. They successfully created a hammer using the materials in their brown bag.

Young Engineers

At STEAM this week, the Second Graders were given an opportunity to be engineers. Each group  of two students was given a paper bag with several objects in it. A challenge was written on the bag and the partners had to use the object in the bag to create an object that met the challenge.  Some challenges were: make something that helps you wake up, make a game, make something that helps you remember, make something you can use to celebrate, etc. They followed the engineering steps of Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, and Improve.

When asked to make an object to help with homework, Maya and Emmet set to work making plans to make a paper holder.

To meet the challenge of creating something that is used to celebrate, Emi and Zora created a limbo stick game.

When asked to make something to make someone happy, Leah and Triniti made this beautiful garden.
Colin and Scout created an interesting note contraption to answer the challenge of making something to help someone remember.

How would you like to try out this automatic pancake flipper that Keith and Joseph designed?

To help someone wake up, Bella and Juliana created this alarm clock and even put it on a stand.

Check out this game that Eli and Zayne created!

After creating their objects, the students shared their creations with their classmates.

Social Studies: Needs and Wants
