Black History Month

February is Black History Month, and the Second Graders are learning about some important black Americans who have made a difference in our world. This week we learned about George Washington Carver and were amazed about how many ways he used peanut butter and sweet potatoes in different products. Did you know that not only was George Washington Carver a scientist, but he was also an artist?.

Louis Latimer, an inventor, and Mae Jemison, the first African American scientist, also made important contributions to our world.

We also listened to Henry's Freedom Box and imagined how difficult and frightening it would be if we were upside down in a box while hoping to make it to a free state without being discovered.

We admire the bravery of Harriet Tubman who risked her life to help slaves escape to freedom by way of the Underground Railroad.

100th Day of School

With the 100th day of school and Valentine's Day both happening on February 14th, it was a very exciting day. The student decorated and wore their "100 Days Smarter" crowns and are posing below with their drawings of themselves when they are 100 years old. We also had time to do 100 physical stretches (in 10 sets of 10) and to play a math game in which the children rolled the dice and added double digit numbers until one of them reached 100 or more.

Valentine's Day

The Second Graders excitedly delivered their valentines to their classmates and then enjoyed reading each one.

Community Time

Last Wednesday the students spent Community Time with their HCA Families rotating to different stations in the MPR, art room, and cafeteria. The stations included balloon relays, making valentines, watching Skittles turn into a rainbow, and making slime. It was the best time ever!
