Week of October 1-5

Guardian Angels

October 2nd is the feast of the Guardian Angels. This feast celebrates God's loving care of each one of us. God sends the angels to love and protect us. The Second Graders decorated their own guardian angels and kept their angels at their desks as a reminder of how our guardian angels watch over us. During October, the students also pray the Guardian Angel prayer each day before they go out to recess.

Science

The second graders began their science lessons this year by exploring the many topics that scientists study. They drew pictures of their favorite topics and shared their ideas with a partner. Their topics included space, the weather, medicine, anatomy, animals, chemistry, and many more.

The students listened to some excerpts from the book, How to Think Like a Scientist, and learned that scientists ask many questions and work to discover the answers. Each student met with a partner to think of three science questions.

Here is a sampling of some of the great questions they wrote:

How do germs make you sick?                               How does a ball bounce?
How do spiders make their webs?                           Why can noses smell?

Students then worked to discover the answer to the question, "Where are the seeds of a marigold flower?" They examined a flower and found the seeds just under the base of the flower.
